Congratulations to Janey and Kent on the birth of their son Otto.
A new addition to the clan. Apparently all are healthy and doing well.
And when he gets a bit older I get to be the alt.uncle*
Cool.

in unrelated uni stuff in the linguistics lecture today was talk about language universals.
apparently there are about 6000 languages in the world and in ALL of them (hence the universal bit) if they have words for more than 2 colour terms the third one will always be the equivalent of 'red'.
The sixth one will always be 'brown'.
i don't know why but i find that both freaky and fantastic.
in my cognitive science tute today (discussion of how perception and memory works in the brain) somebody actually made a reference to the movie The Matrix. admittedly it wasn't the guy I thought would do it but close enough for me.
my wednesday arvo philosophy tute is rapidly turning into the cognitve science comedy hour.
there is the guy who last week was quoting characters from Star Wars. this week it was a reference to Fight Club. i'm thinking of starting a pool, i reckon it is only a matter of time before there is a Matrix reference pulled out, he's still got a few weeks to go.
But the best is the special dickhead, let's call him dickhead S. this is the guy who inevitably hijacks every tute with his loud voice and overbearing nature. the same guy who likes to make grand pronouncements like "Hegel is wrong." Well he has excelled himself. i can't remeber the exact words so i will have to paraphrase as close as i can recall but the following are some of the things that he said this week…
"… and who here actually believes 9/11 really happened"
"… it's not a conspiracy theory if it's true"
"well, Galileo and Copernicus were called conspiracy theorists at the time and they were proven to be right in the end"
the really scary thing is i think he is serious and really believes this stuff
just another day at the office
i swear you gotta wonder how some people manage to breathe and walk at the same time. how do these people manage to make it so far through life and still be so STUPID
in my Cognitive Science tute yesterday while we were discussing how perception works in the brain one guy actually quoted Qui Gon from STAR WARS.
he was completely serious. is it just me that finds this ridiculous? apparently no one else in the room found it as amusing as i did.
i guess you had to be there….
nope. it's two crap movie reviews.
nothing much else to say lately other than the countdown to our European tour is progressing so this will have to do for now…
15 second review – double feature
King Kong (the Peter Jackson remake):
overblown eye candy with plot holes bigger than the one in the ozone layer. willing suspension of disbelief will only carry so far – the fight scenes where Kong starts pulling Jackie Chan kung fu moves were the last straw for me. and another thing can Jack Black ever play anyone other than Jack Black (no evidence to the contrary so far).
The Proposition:
nice cinematography. very ordinary script.
(ps – Nick, don't give up the day job.)
