hole in the head

October 1, 2006 8:46 pm

while ambling about the Landesmuseum here in Mannheim today i saw an old trepanation set complete with velvet lined box.  i’ve read about these before but actually seeing a real set of the instruments was kind of interesting and perversly cool.

as J said when i excitedly pointed it out to her and explained what it was used for “i wonder how many peoples heads got drilled with this one?”.

indeed.

my expanding fan base

August 6, 2006 3:10 am

yeah more half-assed self congratulatory blogging about myself, what the fuck else are these things for anyway

so i can’t sleep and for want of anything better to do i googled myself (as you do…) and came across a page for some 16 year old emo/goth living in melbourne who as part of her profile has listed:

“Favourite poet or writer: i have a few: E.A Poe, Michael Hier and Fido hehe”

and so i move one step closer to becoming a household name….

Congratulations to Janey and Kent on the birth of their son Otto.

A new addition to the clan. Apparently all are healthy and doing well.
And when he gets a bit older I get to be the alt.uncle*

Cool.

either i’m growing a second head or an alien “chestburster” is about to explode from my lower jaw.

more precisely i apparently have an inflamed sub-mantle node. whatever. it hurts. and it looks gross (think big lumpy thing hanging under chin). and i cut it while shaving this morning.

just thought i’d share…

oh, and we’re off for a flying visit to Melbourne this weekend for Sol and Liz’s wedding.

2005 and a return to Adelaide

January 9, 2006 11:30 am

yes, but only for as long as this malaise is present. Will be back up at the dreaded dam in the desert tomorrow night more than likely.

I think M wants me to review 2005, pretending that he can”t remember anything.

2005 – extreme highs, extreme lows. A year of an inordinate number of health issues for us and our extended families. Of excitement, anticipation, of grief and sorrow I have never known before, of shame and failure, rejection, and of love, friendship, companionship and bonding, of frustration and elation upon success and of total meltdown at times.

Why is it that when you fear the worst and it happens, that in all other anticipatory endevours you can only see the forest that you have to navigate before the view that reveals half the world snaps accross your life like a shutter on your personal lens. I’m waiting for my fourth cylinder to start working… the numb bit to get some bloodflow… the bit of the brain that makes all things impossible to pack up and go home with its tool kit, take its little panel van of depression and lose itself in the bush.

as the end of ‘05 rushes into sight i thought it’d be good to do a year end review / wrap up. you know the sort of thing, what we did, best records/books/movies of the year yada yada etc.

then i thought, fuck it, i’ll leave it for someone more informed and entertaining than me (not to mention also being less fundamentaly lazy and with a damn sight better memory than this little black duck).

sooooo, anyone wanna do a guest 2005 review??
if so email me michaelhier@hotmail.com consider it a challenge.

oh and we’re off to Perth for xmas so catch ya in the new year
