Maybe it's like this: Our brains have been trained for many years to recognize patterns from all that we see, hear, etc. So now you get some familiar-looking details from which your brain tries as hard as it can to make out the total picture - but it can't and has to give up in the end. At that point, you're left with a very alert mind without much of a concrete thought - except a feeling of wonder. I think that might be a kind of freed up, expanded consciousness. Illusionists try to get you into that state too: At some point, your intellect gives up and gives in to simple awe - like young children, and maybe saints, have it all the time. Anyway, I started this answer to say that sometimes, you can find out how these 'stories' continue. Google is ideal for finding exact word sequences.
